1AM 2020

Welcome To 1AM

We have been busy in science learning about the parts of a plant and have become fascinated by Venus fly traps!  This week our Venus fly traps caught two flies!  It was very exciting to watch!

We have been learning different ways of identifying different trees too… by looking at their leaves, bark and the shapes of them.

 

We have been reading the story of The Light House Keepers Lunch and have made some amazing artwork around this.  We have been using our senses to write setting descriptions and wrote great character descriptions about Mr Grinling himself.

 

 

We kicked off our final term of Year 1 with a visit to Australia.  We got on a plane, flew half way around the world to compare our local area to the local area that Miss Matheson grew up in.  We noticed there are a lot more buildings here in London… and we done have a coast line or beaches.  We painted some Australian animals with dot painting and found out how the Aboriginals told stories by drawing symbols.

We have also managed to squeeze in a ‘Victorian Day’ where we were in character as children from the Victorian Era.  We compared our school day to those children and have decided that we like school the way it is today!

 

Summer Term

I am so proud of the amount of resilience your children have shown this year.   Every day is a new day in 1AM and we definitely learn something new every day.  We have continued with our continuous provision and your children continue to show such a positive attitude to their learning.

 

TOPIC

 

This term we have been learning all about the Amazon Rainforest.  We have looked at the location of the Amazon and all the different animals that can be found in there.  We learnt about the different layers of the rainforest and what animals live in each layer.

We have been learning different songs in music about friendship, persistence and kindness.  In PSHE we have been working on personal growth and having a growth mindset.  We have been speaking about how we can be a kind and caring friend, and what we can do to help our friends if they are feeling a little upset.  In Art we have been exploring 3D artworks and creating collages of the Amazon Rainforest.

SCIENCE

In science we have continued to look at different weather patterns and seasons.  We continue to track the weather every day and have realised that we have had a lot more sunny days now we are back at school.  We have been super scientists and learnt all about the different parts of plants and are able to label them and say what each part is used for.  Some children in 1AM became fascinated with venus fly traps and we learnt about them too.

MATHS

In Maths we have been working really hard on our number sense and place value of numbers to 50.  We have been practising our number bonds to ten and partitioning numbers to bridge through 10.

ENGLISH

In English we have been practising sequencing and retelling different stories using adjectives and experimenting with different suffixes including ‘est,’ ‘ly’ and ‘ed.’  We read Emma Jane’s Aeroplan, Yeti and the Bird and Where the Wild Things are.  Some of us were super clever and changed the characters or setting to make our story even more interesting.

COOL TIME

We have been extremely busy in COOL time, creating our own learning opportunities and sharing our knowledge with our friends.  We have explored friction and measured the distance cars travelled using measuring tape and spoke about centimetres and metres.  We discovered that the steeper the ramp the faster and further the cars went.

 Autumn Term

It is so lovely to see so many smiling faces in 1AM.  We have spent the last two weeks getting to know each other and finding out about our new routine in Year One.   We have played lots of games and explored our new learning environment, making new friends and playing with friends that we already knew.

ENGLISH & TOPIC

Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth: Amazon.co.uk: Jeffers, Oliver, Jeffers, Oliver: Books

Our Topic this term is ‘All About Me’ and we have begun to read ‘Here We Are’ by Oliver Jeffers.  We have been discussing, writing and drawing about what makes us unique and wonderful as well as why we think Earth is such a wonderful world… Inspired by Luis Armstrong.  We have been talking about our likes and dislikes and recognising that while we are the same in some ways, we are all different in many ways… and that’s what makes us US and UNIQUE!  😊

 We went on a tour of Earth in a space shuttle (thankyou Google Earth) and looked at Bessemer Grange and where we were sitting right there.   We have begun to discuss our local environment and look at man-made and natural objects.

In art we have looked at artists who painted self-portraits such as Pablo Piccaso, Freida Kahlo and Van Gogh and have been creating self-portraits of our own.

 

MATHS

In maths we have begun by looking at numbers and what they are made up of.  This is all part of our ‘Place Value’ unit.  We have been practising our number recognition and representing numbers in different ways with different objects from around out classroom.  We use concrete resources to deepen our understanding and ensure we are able to use different counting strategies to find the total amount.  We are also experimenting with using tens frames to represent these numbers and are finding out what happens when these get full.

Remember the Maths is EVERYWHERE!  Why not do some baking at home, count how many star jumps you can do in 30 seconds, practise looking at clocks and seeing what numbers you can see on there, look at coins and recognise what each coin represents.
