Well done to everyone for settling in so well to our new class, you have all been great and we have already had some fantastic learning!
In English we have been looking at traditional fairy tales, discussing their features and retelling stories.
Our main focus has been on Snow White.
For topic we have been learning about the Great Fire of London!
We were lucky enough to have a fun workshop to find out even more information about it.
What great actors we have at Bessemer Grange!
We have also already been on our first school trip. We went to the Unicorn Theatre, with 2HT to watch ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’.
We all had a great time and stayed in the city to each our lunch.
We are all looking forward to what the next few weeks will bring!
Key Stage 1 had a great time when John Kelly, the famous author, visited and shared some fantastic tips on writing and illustrating stories.
Through our topic work on The Great Fire of London, we learnt that a baker accidently started the fire, his name was Thomas Farynor.
We decided to make our own bread, the same way he would have. It was a lot of fun and tasted great!
We got the chance to visit Dulwich Library, where we listened to a great story and then we were able to choose our own books to take back to school. We even got to check them out ourselves! Next term we can take our books back and choose even more!
This half term our topic is Pirates! We were lucky enough to visit a real galleon, The Golden Hinde which was Sir Francis Drake’s boat. Whilst there we met a pirate and helped out on the galleon by raising the anchor, (Heave Ho!!) loading the cannon and singing some pirate songs. It was a lot of fun, but we were not sure if a pirate life was for us!
In English we have been learning and creating pirate poems, we came up with actions and performed them together.
We had a great visitor recently who was an indian dancer, she showed us many different moves and we all danced together in a fantastic indian dance workshop.
In Science we have been learning about humans and animals and how to stay healthy. We have been looking at different foods and we have also learnt how to take care of our teeth!
If you did not get a chance to see our winter performance please take a look here!
Hope everybody had a great holiday and are ready for a fantastic new term of learning!
This term we will be learning about Florence Nightingale, who she is, what her life was like and why she is famous. We had a great day visiting the Florence Nightingale Museum, what a great way to start our topic and introduce ourselves to the life and times of Florence.
We had another visit to Dulwich Library recently, where we were able to take part in a great storytelling session and choose a selection of new books to take back to school with us.
In Science we have been learning about plants, knowing the different parts of a plant, how they grow and what they need to grow. We carried out different investigations and came to the conclusion that plants grow best with sun, water and soil, as well as being in a warm place.
We recently enjoyed a Just Press Play session, where we all listened to an interactive story about Florence Nightingale, we were able to re-enact some of Florence’s experiences at home and in the Crimea.
This half term our topic is The Seaside, we will be looking at how the seaside has changed over time and taking in the sights when we visit Brighton beach on the 3rd of March!
In English we have been looking at the story of The Pea and The Princes, a alternative version, looking at the story from the Pea’s point of view. We have been retelling the story using a small world setting.
We had a fantastic time on our trip to the Dulwich Picture Gallery. We were able to look around the gallery at looks of different pieces of art and then we had a go at drawing some of the pictures. We also took part in an art session where were were taught how to use polyboards to create pictures by printing. This needed alot of muscle!
We all celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as the BFG, making our own giant ears. We also had the pleasure of meeting the children’s author Keilly Swift, who helped us created mixed up characters of our own.
What a fantastic trip to Brighton we had. After learning about Andy Goldsworth at school, we were inspired to create our own works of art using flotsam, that we found on the beach. We discussed whether our finds were natural and man-made items, drew sketches of our scultures and the coastline. We thought about how it may have changed over the years, comparing the past with the present. We also had a walk along the pier!
During Science Week we carried out a range of investigations, such as how to make the best bubble blowers. We then had a challenge to create the tallest towers using just spaghetti and marshmallows. It was more difficult than we though and some didn’t stand very well! We also had a ‘Slime Time’ workshop, where we made our own slime and we had a guest scientist showing us even more interesting scientific facts and experiments!
We have lots to look forward to this term, we will be taking swimming lessons, creating animations and getting very crafting, creating things ready for our carnival at the end of the year!
We have been celebrating Healthy Week, we all took part in a mindfulness session in which we vreated mandala’s whilst listening to music to help us think of things we enjoy to include on our pictures. We also took part in a health and fitness event at Dulwich Park, where we carried out a range of physical activities, such as cheerleading, football and cycling. We all had the chance to improve our cycling skills and some of us managed to complete a whole lap of the park! As part of Healthy Week we also created a ‘Superfood Smoothie’, which we has to make an advert for.
Year 2 have been using their computer and creative skills to produce animations, we had to create characters and sets, as well as write scripts. We had lots of fun making everything ready for our filming morning, where we used the Ipads to film and edit our animations. We even did our own voice recordings!
