Welcome to Bessemer Primary School Early Years

We offer provision from 2-5 years in our Early Years department. We have 25 spaces in Little Stars, our 2-year-old provision, two form entry in Nursery and three form provision in Reception.

 

Bessemer’s Early Years Intent

To provide a broad and balanced curriculum in order to support children to become happy, well-adjusted and healthy lifelong learners regardless of backgrounds, circumstances or needs.

Implementation

Learning in the Early Years at Bessemer takes place through a balance of child-initiated play and adult led learning, including:

  • A diverse and inclusive topic based curriculum built from children’s interests

  • We incorporate emotional literacy throughout with a focus on good mental health and well-being

  • Daily opportunities for children to practise and consolidate their growing knowledge through high-quality provision that promotes child- initiated learning

  • Forest School, Spanish and Music specialists further enriching our curriculum.

 

We are aligned with the EYFS philosophy which puts the child at the centre of everything.  We believe every child is unique so each child is observed upon entry so that we can tailor the curriculum to their needs.

The Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning assist practitioners to focus on how your child learns, rather than just what they are learning. We are then able to plan a balanced and purposeful curriculum which can incorporate both your child’s interests and learning style to maximise the learning time they have with us in school.

The three CoEL are:

  • Playing and exploring (Engagement)– Children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’.

  • Active learning (Motivation) – Children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements.

  • Thinking creatively and critically (Thinking)– Children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

Impact

In the Early Years at Bessemer our goal is for our pupils to:

  • have smooth transitions between Little Stars, Nursery, Reception and beyond

  • leave Early Years with a solid foundation of learning on which to build

  • be confident, resilient, motivated and empathetic

  • to form positive relationships with adults and peers

  • to be positive contributing members of society
