Early Years at Bessemer

‘Teaching is outstanding. Teachers plan a wide range of stimulating and purposeful activities that capture children’s imagination and fully engage their interest. This means that children enjoy learning and make outstanding progress.’

We offer provision from 2-5 years in our Early Years department. We have 25 spaces in Little Stars, our 2-year-old provision, two form entry in Nursery and three form provision in Reception.

Bessemer’s Early Years Intent

To provide a broad and balanced curriculum in order to support children to become happy, well-adjusted and healthy lifelong learners regardless of backgrounds, circumstances or needs.

Implementation

Learning takes place through a balance of child-initiated play and adult led learning, including:

  • The direct teaching of reading and writing and maths everyday
  • We imbed ‘Talk for Writing’ using the 3 I’s of Talk for Writing.
  • Imitation – The children learn to tell the story using story maps and actions.
  • Innovation – The children change aspects of the story such as a character, setting or an event to change the story slightly.
  • Invention – The children invent their own stories to tell verbally and in written form

In Little Stars and Nursery our youngest children use the imitation process to learn rhymes and simple stories.

  • Maths Mastery is implemented to allow the pupils to gain a deep understanding of maths, allowing them to acquire a secure and long-term understanding of maths that allows them to make continual progress to move onto more complex topics
  • A diverse and inclusive topic based curriculum built from children’s interests
  • We incorporate emotional literacy throughout with a focus on good mental health and wellbeing
  • Daily opportunities for children to practise and consolidate their growing knowledge through high-quality provision that promotes child- initiated learning
  • Forest School and Music specialists further enriching our curriculum

We are aligned with the EYFS philosophy which puts the child at the centre of everything.  We believe every child is unique so each child is observed upon entry so that we can tailor the curriculum to their needs.

The Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning assist practitioners to focus on how your child learns, rather than just what they are learning. We are then able to plan a balanced and purposeful curriculum which can incorporate both your child’s interests and learning style to maximise the learning time they have with us in school.

The three CoEL are:

  • Playing and exploring (Engagement)– Children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’.
  • Active learning (Motivation) – Children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements.
  • Thinking creatively and critically (Thinking)– Children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

Impact

For our pupils to:

  • have smooth transitions between Little Stars, Nursery, Reception and beyond
  • leave Early Years with a solid foundation of learning on which to build
  • be confident, resilient, motivated and empathetic
  • to form positive relationships with adults and peers
  • to be positive contributing members of society
