Part 5

We have been busy settling in to our new classroom and learning the names of our new friends.

We decided we needed some rules in Moonbeam Class.  The rules Moonbeam Class decided on are:

  • We walk inside
  • We use quiet voices indoors
  • We have kind and gentle hands
  • We listen to our adults
  • We look after our toys
  • We put our hands up on the carpet when we want to talk
We also have some class targets which are to be able to say goodbye to our parent/carer without support, to be able to hang our coats or jumpers on our pegs and put our bookbags in the bookbag box independently and finally to learn the classroom rules.  If we achieve these and make good choices by following the rules we collect rewards like stickers, treasure chests or our name being written under the sun.

We have been enjoying exploring our indoor and outdoor environment, we have been using mirrors to look at our face and paint self portraits, we have had a dance workshop where we joined in with a dance from the Wizard of Oz and we have been over to the nature garden to meet and feed the chickens.

Here we are enjoying our dance workshop.

This terms Celebration Day was all about children of the world.  Inside Moonbeam we completed activities based around the British isles.  We made flags, crowns and Scottish shortbread.  Here are some photos of us completing these activities with our friends and family.

This half term has been very busy, we have had a visit from an author called David Litchfield who came in to read his lovely book The Bear and the Piano.  The Mad Scientists visited us for an assembly and taught us about Solids, Liquids and Gases.

Our topic this term was the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  In Mathematics we looked at ordering objects by height and using the Mathematical language tall, middle size and short. We have also been adding two numbers to find the total in a variety of ways.

We have been mixing red, blue and yellow to make different colours and also finding out about the artist Jackson Pollack and his interesting style of painting.  We loved Winter Jumper Day and finding out about the celebration of Christmas.

Spring Term

This half term our topic has been Space.  We have found out the names of the planets and lots of other exciting facts using non fiction books and the internet.  We used our knowledge to make a Guess Who Planet Game.  We read the book The Way Back Home, and designed and made junk model rockets to help the boy from the story get home.  In maths we have been learning to subtract/take away.  We have set lots of number problems to help us use subtraction in a number of ways and have different strategies including counting backwards to get the answer.

We had lots of fun on our Maths Celebration Day, we hope you enjoyed this opportunity to see how we teach maths in a fun and play base way and are able to use some of these ideas at home.  The trip to the Unicorn was a great experience.  It taught us about making relationships and sharing and friendships.

For the second half of the Spring half term we have been learning to tell the story of the Gingerbread man using actions.  We enjoyed innovating the story to make our own versions and we hoped you liked reading them.    In maths this half term we have been continuing to add and subtract by counting on and counting back.  We have also been looking at different patterns and making our own repeating patterns.

The children took part in a variety of investigations during science week and we worked on different scientific skills like predicting and observing.   Everybody loved making their own volcano erupt using vinegar, washing up liquid and bicarbonate of soda.  The children also had the opportunity to help toys escape from ice, investigate waterproof materials, make their own bubbles and even make lava lamps.

We had great fun on our trip to the Little Angels Theatre to see ‘The Singing Mermaid.’  It was amazing to see how to the puppets moved around the stage.   Thank you for all the donations and sponsorship for Sports relief.  Everyone loved taking part in our high energy aerobics session!

This term has been very eventful.  We have been learning about ‘Superheroes’ and real life superheroes.  We have had lots of visits of various ‘People Who Help Us’ including a lawyer, a police officer, a doctor and a nurse.  We also had a wonderful time at the farm, we made delicious healthy breakfasts for Masterchef during Healthy Week and had lots of fun celebrating Carnival.
